the progress*

Since December 2018 we have been working hard on the recovery of all the rooms, floors and walls. We have built a toilet and a shower and made a lot of adobe bricks. With the volunteers we dug several water reserves for the project, temporarily made from plastic and palmbranches, created various sheds to protect from the sun, almost finished the kitchen and built two bridges between the main road and the house.

Timeline design by Sara De Moitié

The first 1,5 years we lived and worked in the project without electricity. In summer 2020, Said installed electricity throughout the house and we could finally use a refrigerator. He also installed lighting and connected a pump from the water reserves to the smaller tanks in the house. Shortly after, we created a plumbing system so that we had water in the shower, toilet and kitchen.

We have started growing some young figs, alfalfa, grass and wheat. The growth and survival of each plant is still a huge struggle due to the heat and a lack of water. Preparations for new rooms and a wall around the land are in progress. We are reaching out to several nomad women in the desert and have made a first step in selling some of their handmade products. The underground water sources beneath our land have been checked. Said has made a first start in digging a well manually. The plan is to start drilling the well, as soon as we have funding to do so.

*text & timeline updated in summer 2023.
